National Science Foundation Program Director Seminar

National Science Foundation Program Director Seminar
12pm – 1pm October 22nd, Hasselmann Alumni House – Grand Hall
Design and Engineering of Synthetic Biosystems to Enhance Health, Economy, and the Environment: A National Science Foundation Perspective
Steven Peretti
Program Director
Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental, and Transport Systems
Associate Professor
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
North Carolina State University
Abstract
The National Science Foundation supports a spectrum of fundamental research in the general area of synthetic biology, and in life sciences more generally. It is often unclear what NSF does support, what it will support, and what program supports what sorts of research. Unfortunately, I will not be able to provide a crystal-clear roadmap for the optimal targeting of your particular research ideas. What I will try to do is explain what the major programs are and what they are looking for, and more generally, how to find your way through the maze of apparently overlapping programs that are relevant to different aspects of biotechnology. I will also discuss the Rules of Life, and spend some time trying to provide insight into how the Big Ideas influence possible funding trends at NSF.
