DESCRIPTION:There is a growing recognition that the built environment can s
 ubstantially\nimpact occupant well-being. However\, pinpointing the specifi
c impacts of design features proves\nto be challenging. While significant a
 dvancements have been made using sensing\, feedback\, and\ncontrol in\n"sma
rt buildings"\, outcomes have focused primarily on energy savings\, thermal
\ncomfort\, and security. Buildings of the future should go beyond this to
infer and support the mental\nand physical well-being of the occupants. A s
cientific approach to designing buildings for\nwellbeing can both create kn
owledge as well as improve the physical and mental health of large\npopulat
ions. Our team with expertise in architecture\, sructural and materials eng
 ineering\nhuman-computer interaction\, psychology\, environmental behavior\
, and security\, privacy and\nlaw is examining how interior features (i.e.\
 , materials\, lighting\, and artwork representing diverse\nidentities) rela
te to multifaceted dimensions of well-being. Through online studies\, contr
olled\nlaboratory experiments\, and vitual reality studies\, we have been e
xploring the effects of these\nvaried features on biopsychosocial indicator
 s of\nwell-being including belonging\, stress\,\ncreativity\, and pro-envir
onmental concern\, measured through physiological sensors and self-\nreport
ed assessments. The results of several related studies and their implicatio
ns will be presented\,\nas well as methodological challenges surrounding th
 e design\, experimentation\, and operation of\nhuman-centered built environ
 ments.
