The Missouri S&T department of civil, architectural and environmental engineering is proud to announce the dedication of the Dr. Wei-Wen and Yueh-Hsin Yu Knowledge Center as part of the 2024 MinerFest Homecoming activities at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, in Room 301 Butler-Carlton Civil Engineering Hall. The Yu Learning Center was made possible by support from Dr. Yu, Curators Distinguished Professor emeritus of civil engineering at Missouri S&T, and his family, who named the space as part of the Butler-Carlton renovations completed in 2004. Since that time, the space housed the Wei-Wen Yu Center for Cold-Formed Steel Structures until the center closed in 2020. The conversion of the space, to a place for students to study and relax, also acknowledges and highlights the amazing career of Dr. Yu and his contributions to Missouri S&T and the field of cold-formed steel design.

Dr. Yu joined the faculty as an associate professor of civil engineering. During his tenure at S&T, he published the seminal textbook on cold-formed steel design, five additional books and hundreds of articles, technical reports, design specifications and handbooks related to cold-formed steel. He was the first Curators Distinguished Professor in the UMR School of Engineering, being bestowed with the title in 1982.

The Center for Cold-Formed Steel Structures (CCFSS) was established at Missouri S&T in May 1990 under the sponsorship of AISI and the university. The primary objective of the CCFSS was to encourage and promote the use of cold-formed steel construction through research, engineering education, technical services and professional activities. It was renamed as the Wei-Wen Yu Center for Cold-Formed Steel Structures in 2000 to recognize his many contributions to the cold-formed steel community.

Dr. Yu will join the event online from his home in Boston, where he celebrated his 101st birthday earlier this year. Read more about Dr. Wei Wen Yu and his career from when we celebrated his 100th birthday.
