DESCRIPTION:The arts\, languages and philosophy department invites the Span
 ish-speaking community at S&T to participate in the next El conversatorio 
 event at 5:30 p.m. Thursday\, Sept. 30. via Zoom.\n\nGuest speaker John Tr
 evathan will present "La Costa de la Muerte: el hundimiento del Prestige" 
 or "The Death Coast of Spain: The Sinking of the Prestige." \n\nJohn Treva
 than is an assistant teaching professor of Spanish at the University of Mi
 ssouri - St. Louis. He specializes in modern and contemporary Iberian lite
 ratures and cultures with particular interests in the environmental humani
 ties and Iberian studies. Dr. Trevathan recently contributed an essay on N
 unca Máis and the Prestige oil spill to the collected volume Ethics of Li
 fe: Contemporary Iberian Debates (Hispanic Issues\, Vanderbilt University 
 Press). His article\, “Submergence” lays out a framework for transatla
 ntic ecocriticism\, focusing in particular on hydroelectric dams\, islands
  and archipelagoes\, and his book Beyond the Niche: Ecological Cultural Pr
 oduction in the Iberian Peninsula explores the array of roles that nature 
 and ecology play in both buttressing and unsettling fixed notions of cultu
 ral and national identity. \n\nEl conversatorio is a one-hour informal vir
 tual talk in which guest speakers from different areas of the Spanish-spea
 king world share their thoughts on current events and issues. After a pres
 entation of 15-20 minutes and a question-and-answer session\, participants
  will have an opportunity to interact with each other and practice their S
 panish. \n\nThe fall 2021 series of El conversatorio will take place once 
 a month. A Zoom link and password will be provided and all meetings will b
