About this Event
William D. Phillips, one of three recipients of the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1997 for the development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light, will give a special colloquium through the Physics Department. His presentation, titled "A New Measure: the Revolutionary Quantum Reform of the Metric System" chronicles the redefinition of the SI base units by fixing fundamental constants of measure. Dr. Phillips will discuss why we needed such a reform, how it was achieved, and some of the impacts of measurement science across STEM and our everyday lives.
This event has also been organized by the Society of Physics Students and the American Nuclear Society at Missouri S&T. Individuals across the S&T community are invited to register in advance to join us for this virtual seminar on Thursday, April 1st, at 4:00 PM.
