DESCRIPTION:You're invited to a seminar titled "Vision of the Manufacturing
Emphasis within Mechanical Engineering\," with Dr. Jacob Miller\, a lectu
rer for mechanical and aerospace engineering at Missouri S&T and a facilit
ies engineer at Brewer Science\, located in Rolla\, Missouri.\n\nAbstract:
Today\, there is a transition taking place within the US and global manuf
acturing industry. A transition comparable to the global industrialization
of World War II. A transition that will profoundly alter the responsibili
ties\, skills\, and working relationships of machinists\, manufacturing en
gineers\, and mechanical engineers. Tomorrow's manufacturing industry will
be composed of hybrid systems\, digital and physical\, metal and composit
e materials\, additive and subtractive processes\, and human and robotic o
perators. Manufacturing companies are working now to increase productivity
\, output\, profitability\, and competitiveness as their workforces become
smaller and younger. The jobs of CNC machinists and manufacturing and mec
hanical engineers are increasingly converging to accomplish these objectiv
es. To support the future\, Universities must adapt and develop new curric
ula that embody this convergence\, so students develop tangible\, quantifi
able skills that the manufacturing industry requires. \n\nBiography: Dr.
Jacob Miller is a Lecturer within the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Department at Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T
) and a Facilities Engineer at Brewer Science\, located in Rolla\, MO. Dr.
Miller has worked for over 25 years in Manufacturing Engineering. For 17
years\, Dr. Miller worked at the Y-12 National Security Complex\, supporti
ng R&D prototype development\, process creation\, and design of experiment
 s. Dr. Miller has in-depth experience with traditional machining\, additiv
 e manufacturing\, metal casting\, forming\, forging\, and parametric CAD/C
AM design.\n\nDr. Miller's commitment to education is evident through his
teaching experience\, ranging from undergraduate courses like Introduction
to Manufacturing Processes Lab to graduate-level courses such as Explosiv
es Handling and Safety. His approach emphasizes hands-on learning\, group
collaboration\, and effective communication\, ensuring students are well-p
repared for the challenges of the engineering profession.\n\nDr. Miller is
a researcher with 3 US Patents and numerous peer-reviewed publications an
d conference presentations to his credit. His expertise extends to explosi
ve dynamics\, combustible dust\, and airborne release fractions (ARF) / re
 spirable fractions (RF).
